The exhibit curated especially for the Brodsky Gallery and the Public Gallery within The Heldrich, includes Prints & Multiples by George Segal and Painting Table Still Lifes by Rena Segal

The public is invited to an opening reception to be held on September 10th from 6:00 to 7:30p.m. at The Heldrich located at 10 Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick.

Limited edition etchings, silkscreens and lithograph prints by world-renowned artist George Segal will be featured in the Brodsky Gallery, located on the first level of The Heldrich.  The George Segal exhibit will also include prints from his Blue Jean series as well as many other figurative portraits.

George’s daughter Rena Segal will be exhibiting concurrently in the Public Gallery, located on the second level of The Heldrich, featuring her whimsical Pastel series inspired by her own paints and brushes as the subject matter. Rena has been painting steadily for more than 35 years with her recognizable signature style

The exhibit is sponsored in partnership with the Brodsky Gallery, the Rabbet Gallery, and New Brunswick Development Corporation (Devco).

George Segal is a world renowned artist who was born in New York City on November 26, 1924 to a Jewish couple who emigrated from Eastern Europe. His parents first settled in the Bronx where they ran a butcher shop. They later moved to a New Jersey poultry farm. He married in 1946 and he and his wife Helen bought their own chicken farm in South Brunswick, New Jersey. To support his family during the lean years he taught Art and English at the local high school and at Rutgers University.

The last years of his life were filled with new creation and expression. His black and white photographs of the streets of New York and New Jersey and of people in his life were used to create new tableaux for his sculpture and to create close up drawings of human expression. He remained active, engaged and productive until his death on June 9, 2000. Throughout his life he was recognized around the world for his artistic work and his humanistic passion.

Rena Segal grew up on that chicken farm. She was interested in art at a very young age. Initially, Rena studied art at Montclair State University and then received a master of fine arts degree from Rutgers University. Currently residing in North Brunswick, Rena has been painting steadily for more than 35 years developing a recognizable signature style. Although her subject matter has diversified with time, her stylistic simplification of forms and her bold use of color remain constant.

The Rabbet Gallery has been exhibiting artwork by regional artists in its New Brunswick loft space for 25 years. The representation of the multiple work from the George and Helen Segal Foundation is a major addition to the galleries stable. Rabbet Gallery is currently located at 120 Georges Road. There are many more works that were not included in the show that can be seen at the gallery. The hours are Tuesday through Friday 9-5 and Saturday 10-3 or by appointment.
