Rena Segal Painting Survey

Work

Rabbet Gallery is proud to present “Painting Survey”, a one-person show featuring the art works of Rena Segal. There will be a variety of work that will span over 30 years. The show will open to the public with a reception for the artist on Sunday, November 9th from 3-5 p.m.

Rena Segal grew up in South Brunswick, New Jersey. She was interested in art at a very young age. Initially, Rena studied art at Montclair State University and then received a master of fine arts degree from Rutgers University. Currently residing in North Brunswick, Rena has been painting steadily for over 35 years developing a recognizable signature style. Although her subject matter has diversified with time, her stylistic simplification of forms and her bold use of color remain constant. The show will be a combination of portraiture, still life’s and landscapes.

Rena’s portraits are of her family and friends. The acrylic canvases are warm and sentimental clearly showing her personal attachment to the subject. The acrylic paintings are thin in some places exposing a linear under painting.

The landscapes were inspired by Farrington Lake, a spot near her familial home in New Jersey. The style is impressionist but contemporary. The paintings are of grass, trees and marshes with strong warm colors exemplifying fall at its peak moment. The surface of the painting is intensified with the use of oil sticks delineating the motion of the grass in the wind.

Still life’s have been a theme in Rena’s paintings since high school. The selected objects she chooses to paint have a special meaning to her. In her early paintings she included furniture, tables and chairs Currently she has been painting a collection of bottles, vases and fruit. Her compositions typically line the elements up in a horizontal manner. The brush strokes are smooth and seem smeared at times as if the objects are melting. The edges of the objects are not well defined adding to the dream-like paintings.

This is also achieved by layering oil stick over the acrylic painted surface.

Rabbet will be exhibiting almost 50 paintings varying in size.
